The rules, in plain English.
Serento is licensed, not sold. By installing and using the app you accept the rules below - they cover the licence we grant you, how subscriptions and the free trial work, what you may and may not do with the app, and the limits of our responsibility.
01 The licence we grant you
Subject to these terms, Dusty Enterprise SRL (registered in Bucharest, Romania) grants you a personal, revocable, non-transferable, non-exclusive licence to install and use Serento on iOS and iPadOS devices you own or control. The licence is for personal, non-commercial purposes. You're not buying the app - you're buying the right to run it under these terms.
02 Trial, subscription, and lifetime purchase
Serento ships with a 14-day free trial that starts when you first launch the app on an Apple ID that has never used the trial before. After 14 days the trial expires and access to the app requires an active subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase. All billing is handled by Apple via the App Store.
- Annual subscription. Auto-renews for the published yearly price unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Manage and cancel under iOS Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions.
- Lifetime purchase. A one-time payment that unlocks the app for the lifetime of the product. No recurring billing. Tied to the Apple ID that made the purchase; Apple's Family Sharing rules determine whether it carries to family members.
- Free trial - anti-abuse. To prevent the same Apple ID from cycling through repeated 14-day trials, we store a small anti-abuse record in your private CloudKit container. iCloud must be enabled in iOS Settings for the trial to start. The record can't be read by us, only checked locally on launch - it answers a single question: "has this Apple ID already used its trial?".
- Pricing. Current prices are shown inside the app on the subscription screen. Apple may convert prices to your local currency and apply local taxes. We may change prices for future renewals with reasonable notice; existing subscriptions renew at the price displayed at the time of the most recent billing event unless we explicitly notified you otherwise.
03 Refunds
Refunds for App Store purchases - including Serento subscriptions and the lifetime purchase - are processed by Apple, not by Dusty Enterprise SRL. To request a refund, use Apple's "Report a Problem" flow at reportaproblem.apple.com. EU consumers retain their statutory 14-day right of withdrawal under Directive 2011/83/EU; exercise it via the same Apple flow.
04 What you may not do
These restrictions apply to your use of the app:
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble. Except where this is expressly permitted by law (notably under EU Directive 2009/24/EC for interoperability purposes you cannot otherwise achieve).
- Redistribute the app. Don't sell, sublicense, rent, lease, host, or otherwise transfer your copy of Serento to anyone else. The licence is yours, not yours to give away.
- Circumvent technical measures. Don't bypass any DRM, geo-restriction, or access control on streams you play through Serento. Don't attempt to defeat the trial / subscription gating.
- Use the app for unlawful content. Don't use Serento to stream, broadcast, or facilitate access to copyrighted material you don't have the rights to. You're the one connecting the app to your servers and streams; what flows through is your responsibility.
- Misuse the diagnostic-log channel. The "Send Logs to Developer" button is for genuine bug reports. Don't use it as an alternative channel for marketing, harassment, or anything else.
05 Your music and your servers
Serento doesn't host or distribute music. It's a control point: it browses your UPnP servers (MinimServer, Plex, Twonky, Asset UPnP, JRiver Media Center, Kodi UPnP, and similar) and tells your renderer what to play. The audio bytes flow from your server directly to your renderer; we never touch them. You're responsible for: owning or being licensed to access the content on your servers; complying with the licence terms of any internet radio station you tune to; respecting copyright and broadcasting rights in your jurisdiction.
06 Internet radio
A radio preset in Serento is just metadata - name, codec hint, and stream URL. When you press Play, your device connects to the broadcaster's URL directly. We have no relationship with the broadcaster and no visibility into the stream content. Broadcasters change, redirect, paywall, or shut down streams at their own discretion; we're not responsible for stream availability or audio quality.
07 Compatibility & service availability
Serento is built and tested against a specific set of UPnP servers and audiophile renderers. It works with most spec-compliant UPnP / OpenHome devices, but the UPnP-AV / OpenHome ecosystems are decades old and full of vendor-specific quirks. We can't guarantee compatibility with every server or renderer ever made. Concretely:
- Tested servers. MinimServer, Asset UPnP, Plex.
- Tested renderers. Rockna, Linn, Lumin, Esoteric, Technics, iFi, WiiM, Eversolo.
- Beyond that. Your mileage may vary. Some devices have firmware quirks that no third-party control point can fully work around - those will manifest as the same behaviour you'd see with any other control point app.
08 Network access required
Serento needs iOS Local Network permission to discover and control UPnP servers and renderers on your Wi-Fi network. The first time you launch the app on a new device, iOS will prompt you for this permission. You can revoke it at any time in iOS Settings → Serento → Local Network; if you do, server browsing and remote-renderer playback stop working, but local playback to your iPhone / iPad's built-in output continues to function.
09 iCloud requirement
The 14-day free trial and active subscription / lifetime entitlements require an iCloud account signed in on the device. This is solely for anti-abuse (preventing the same Apple ID from running repeat trials) and for syncing your favourites, playlists, tags, and bookmarks across your devices - see the Privacy Policy for the full data inventory. If you sign out of iCloud, sync stops and the trial / subscription gate may block paid features until you sign back in. We don't store any iCloud data on our own servers.
10 Updates and beta features
We release updates through the App Store at our discretion. Updates may add, change, or remove features. Some features in the app may be labelled as beta or experimental - those are exploratory work that may change shape, behaviour, or disappear without notice. Beta features are offered "as is" with no implicit promise that they'll be retained in the final product.
11 Warranty disclaimer
Serento is provided "as is" and "as available". To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Dusty Enterprise SRL disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, and non-infringement. We don't warrant that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, free of security vulnerabilities, compatible with every device, or that audio playback will be bit-perfect on every server / renderer / DAC combination. This disclaimer does not affect statutory rights you cannot waive under your local consumer-protection law - see Section 14.
12 Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Dusty Enterprise SRL's total liability arising out of or in connection with these terms or your use of Serento - whether in contract, tort, statute, or otherwise - is limited to the amount you paid for the app in the 12 months preceding the event giving rise to the claim. We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, punitive, or exemplary damages, including but not limited to lost profits, lost data, or loss of goodwill. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death, personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot be limited or excluded under applicable law.
13 Third-party services Serento depends on
Serento's normal operation involves several third parties. Each has its own terms, which we are not party to and have no control over:
- Apple Inc. App Store distribution, iCloud / CloudKit sync, StoreKit billing, system frameworks. Your separate agreement with Apple governs these.
- Plex Inc. Only if you connect a Plex Media Server. Your separate agreement with Plex governs your Plex account and servers.
- Your UPnP server vendor. MinimServer, Asset UPnP, Twonky, JRiver, Kodi, etc. - each has its own licence and terms.
- Internet radio broadcasters. When you play a station, you connect to the broadcaster directly. Their terms govern that connection.
14 Consumer rights (EU)
If you acquired Serento from the App Store as a consumer resident in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with mandatory consumer-protection rules, your statutory rights under that law remain in full force. Nothing in these terms overrides them. In particular: the EU 14-day right of withdrawal for digital content (Directive 2011/83/EU), the right to a conforming product under the Sale of Goods Directive (EU 2019/771), and any equivalent rights in your jurisdiction. Refunds are processed by Apple - see Section 03.
15 Termination
These terms remain in effect until terminated. You can terminate at any time by deleting the app from your device(s). We may terminate or suspend your licence if you materially breach these terms. On termination, your right to use Serento ends; uninstalling the app removes the local data the app stored on your device (see the Privacy Policy for the inventory). Sections 11, 12, 13, and 16 survive termination.
16 Governing law and dispute resolution
These terms are governed by the laws of Romania, excluding its conflict-of-laws rules. Disputes that cannot be resolved informally fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of the competent courts in Bucharest, Romania - without prejudice to any mandatory consumer-jurisdiction rules in your country of residence (within the EU, consumers can bring proceedings in the courts of their home country under Regulation (EU) 1215/2012).
17 Apple-required terms
The following provisions are required by Apple's App Store distribution model, in addition to (and not in place of) anything else in these terms:
- Apple is not a party. These terms are between you and Dusty Enterprise SRL. Apple is not a party to them and has no obligations relating to the app under them.
- Standard Apple EULA applies. The Apple Media Services Terms and the Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement (apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula) apply alongside these terms; in case of conflict, the more user-protective rule prevails for EU consumers.
- Maintenance and support. Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support services for Serento.
- Warranty. In the event of any failure of Serento to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the App Store purchase price (if any). To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation.
- Claims. Any product-liability, conformity-to-law, or consumer-protection claims relating to the app are the responsibility of Dusty Enterprise SRL, not Apple.
- Third-party beneficiary. Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
18 Privacy and anonymous telemetry
Use of Serento is also governed by the Serento Privacy Policy. It describes what data the app processes, what stays on your device, what (if anything) syncs via Apple iCloud, and what your rights are under the GDPR.
As a condition of using Serento, you agree that the app collects and sends us privacy-preserving telemetry - an app-generated anonymous install id; a one-way (irreversible) hash of your iCloud account identifier used only to group your own devices together (we never receive the identifier itself); coarse device facts and app-usage durations; the capabilities of the renderers you use; and library-composition counts/percentages, including how complete your music metadata is - all itemised in Section 02a of the Privacy Policy. It contains no personal data, never reveals who you are or the contents of your library, is never sold, and raw reports are deleted after 13 months. Because it is integral to maintaining and improving the product, there is no in-app opt-out; if you do not agree to it, your remedy is to not use the app.
19 Changes
We may revise these terms from time to time. Material changes will be announced in-app and reflected on this page with an updated effective date. If you continue using Serento after the new terms take effect, you accept them; if you don't accept them, your remedy is to stop using the app and (if you wish) request a refund via Apple as outlined in Section 03.
