How does all of this
actually work?

Servers, renderers, syncing, discovery: the words sound technical, but the ideas are simple. This page explains the whole UPnP ecosystem visually, in plain language, so everything Serento does finally clicks. Ten minutes, no jargon left unexplained.

Three roles, one home network

Every UPnP music system, no matter the brand, is the same play with three actors. Tap each one to see what it does. The amber dots are the conversation flowing over your Wi-Fi.

Serento: the remote control

Serento is the screen in your hand. It doesn't store your music and it doesn't make the sound: it directs. You browse the library, pick an album, choose which speaker plays it. In UPnP language this role is called the control point. The magic: because everyone speaks the same language, Serento can direct any server and any renderer, from any brand.

One device can play two roles. Your iPhone can be the remote and the player (choose “This iPhone” as the output). A NAS can hold the server. But the three roles always exist, that's the key mental model.

How do they find each other?

No pairing, no codes, no accounts. When Serento opens, it calls out on your Wi-Fi (“anyone here who speaks UPnP?”) and every server and renderer answers with its name and address. That call-and-answer is a standard called SSDP, and it's why everything appears by itself. Try it:

For discovery to work

  • Phone/iPad/Mac and server on the same Wi-Fi network
  • iOS asks once for Local Network permission, say yes (Settings → Serento → Local Network if you missed it)
  • The server app is actually running on its computer/NAS

The classic blockers

  • Guest Wi-Fi or a second network name, devices can't see each other
  • VPN on the phone, traffic leaves your home network; turn it off while listening
  • Router/AP “client isolation”, a setting that deliberately walls devices off; disable it
  • Computer firewall blocking the server app

Why does Serento sync?

This is the question we get most. Short answer: sync copies the card catalogue, not the books. Your server knows thousands of albums. Asking it over Wi-Fi for every screenful (every scroll, every search, every letter you type) would feel slow and clunky. So Serento does it once, properly:

What sync copies

Titles, artists, albums, genres, years, cover art, formats: the information about your music. It's small and fast.

What sync does not copy

The audio files themselves. Those stay on the server and stream on demand when you press play. Your phone doesn't fill up.

Instant browsing, instant search, beautiful shelves, even with a six-figure track count. The library feels local, because the catalogue is.

When do I sync?

First time

Sync Data: the full catalogue copy. Grab a coffee for a big library; it's a one-time cost per device.

Added new music

Sync Data: after the first time it only brings in what is new or changed, so a top-up takes seconds (MinimServer & Plex).

Retagged files

Run Sync Data again so corrected titles, covers and tags replace the old catalogue.

Each device keeps its own catalogue. Your iPhone, iPad and Mac each sync once. That's why a brand-new device shows an empty library until you run its first Sync Data, nothing is wrong, it just hasn't copied the catalogue yet.

Where does the music actually flow?

Here's the part that surprises everyone. When you play to a streamer, the audio never touches your phone. Serento just tells the streamer “fetch this song from the server”, then the two of them talk directly. Flip the output below and watch the path change:

Your first five minutes in Serento

    Open Serento on the same Wi-Fi

    Allow Local Network when iOS asks. Discovery starts by itself, no setup screen needed.

    Pick your server

    Go to Settings → Libraries. Your server appears by name (that's SSDP at work). Tap it.

    Run Sync Data

    The catalogue copies over, you'll watch the album count climb. Big library? Let it finish once; every later launch is instant.

    Choose the output

    Tap the output selector and pick your streamer, or “This iPhone / iPad / Mac”. This is the renderer role from section 01.

    Browse, tap an album, listen. Next time you add music to the server, run Sync Data and it appears here.

The questions everyone asks

  1. Is the server app running right now on its computer/NAS?
  2. Is your device on the same Wi-Fi name as the server (not guest Wi-Fi, not cellular)?
  3. iOS: Settings → Serento → Local Network = on.
  4. VPN off on the phone/Mac.
  5. Router settings: disable AP/client isolation if present.
  6. Computer firewall: allow the server app.

Ninety-nine times out of a hundred it's one of the first four.

Playing to a streamer: no. The audio flows server → streamer directly; your phone is just the remote and can sleep. Playing on the device itself: the device is the player, so it must stay on the network and awake enough to play (locking the screen is fine; leaving Wi-Fi range stops it).

No: servers, renderers and Serento talk entirely inside your home network. Internet is only used for extras like online radio, artist photos and metadata lookups. Your music plays fine with the internet down.

The catalogue on your device is a copy, it doesn't know the server changed. First make the server itself rescan (MinimServer: Status → Rescan; Plex: scan library), then in Serento run Sync Data — after the first sync it only pulls what changed. The new albums land in Recently Added.

Files often carry a small embedded thumbnail (around 500×500). A folder.jpg / cover.jpg next to the tracks is usually the full-resolution cover, and Serento prefers it automatically, so big screens (Now Playing, album pages) stay sharp.

UPnP is a home-network ecosystem, outside your Wi-Fi the server is unreachable. For listening on the go, use Serento's downloads: save albums to the device while at home, play them anywhere.

Not when a streamer is the output: it pulls the original file straight from the server, bit-perfect, FLAC, hi-res, DSD, untouched by the phone. When the device itself is the output, the device decodes and plays at the best quality its hardware supports.

UPnP is the shared language. DLNA is a certification built on it; for our purposes, the same thing. OpenHome is an extension some hi-fi streamers speak: it lets the streamer hold its own play queue, so playback survives even if the phone disappears entirely. Serento speaks all three and picks the best one automatically, nothing to configure.

Both. Multiple libraries live side-by-side in Settings → Libraries (each syncs separately). And multiple Serento devices co-exist happily, each keeps its own catalogue copy, and on the same network they even share now-playing state, so the iPad can show and steer what the iPhone started.

It's reading your entire catalogue (potentially tens of thousands of entries) plus cover art, over Wi-Fi, once. After that, browsing never touches the network and later top-ups (Sync Data) take seconds. One-time cost, permanent payoff.
